Shout out to Reed Elementary!
Reed Elementary 1st graders are making an impact through their project “Protect the Water!” as part of the 2024-25 Green Schools Quest on the theme of Biodiversity & Wellness.
1st graders at Reed Elementary recognized that litter from the playground and school grounds was blowing into Black Creek and into the storm drains when it rained. They picked up litter and took up a water protection campaign with student-designed educational stickers, student-made protecting/conserving water murals and signs, and an educational video in the format of a special edition of their school news show. This project has exposed Reed students to sustainability and how they can make a big difference, which they are passing on to their families and classmates. This student-led project was developed with the leadership and guidance of Beth Knoot, Gifted Teacher at Reed (School Leader), and Ian Ashcraft of St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District (Green Mentor).
Project Impact:
• 15 students / 1 faculty directly involved
• 400 students / 45 faculty & staff impacted beyond direct participants
• 50 community members impacted
Thank you Reed Elementary team for your impact connecting people, places and planet with your project “Protect the Water”!
About the Green Schools Quest: A Project-Based Challenge
This Green Schools Quest program, which is a part of the Show-Me Green Schools suite, invites PreK-12 schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois to devise and implement creative, effective and no/low-cost sustainability practices at their school with the help of a school leader and Green Mentor. Teams engage in their chosen sustainability project from October through March and submit their outcomes for a chance to win cash prizes. Celebrate this year’s winners with us at our Annual Green Schools Event on April 16th!
Join us in celebrating these awesome achievements!
