We wanted to give a shout out to member Maggie McCoy of Missouri Botanical Garden for her work developing impactful climate change education and storytelling. Maggie also serves on our Engagement & Outreach Committee and has volunteered as a Green Mentor for our Green Schools Quest for many years!
As the Climate Change Education Coordinator at Missouri Botanical Garden, Maggie McCoy works closely with the Science & Conservation team to translate research done on climate change to students and teachers. As part of this work, Maggie and other colleagues at Missouri Botanical Garden were selected to be part of the Plants and Climate Change Education (PLACCE) cohort, an initiative of the United States Botanic Garden and the American Public Gardens Association. Funding and collaboration in this peer learning group will enable the Garden to share one of its greatest resources, the herbarium, with educators and students. Herbaria are libraries of preserved dried plant specimens. The Garden has one of the largest herbaria in the world with over 7.5 million specimens.
Maggie provides programs to K-12 students and teachers on the topics of waste reduction, stormwater management, climate change, and energy efficiency. She is also passionate about reducing food waste and helps lead a working group with OneSTL to move forward regional initiatives focused on sending less food to the landfill. Earlier this year, Maggie was featured on KMOV where she demonstrated two ways to start composting at home.
Maggie, formerly having worked at both the St. Louis Zoo and Endangered Wolf Center, has an extensive history in conservation, education, and sustainability education. She loves being able to connect people to information and skills that will help them make more sustainable choices. We are so proud to have you as a member!
